ABout The School
At Kushindokai we believe in helping every student achieve their full potential. We work on overcoming obstacles and celebrating achievements. We set high expectations for our students to put forth their best effort and progress on their journey at their own pace.
Through all the changes over the years, the underlying principles of Kushindokai have remained focused on providing the best training to the students in a family atmosphere. We believe that quality training produces superior martial artists, bringing out the best virtues in people both inside the dojo and out in the real world.
With a down-to-earth training approach that asks students to bring a positive attitude and give their best effort, we strive to provide a training atmosphere that helps all of our students cultivate the self-confidence, discipline, and respect for themselves and others that will allow them to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives.
As stated by the father of modern karate, Sensei Gichin Funakoshi, the primary purpose of Karate is to be a better citizen:
"Karate-do is not only the acquisition of certain defensive skills but also the mastering of the arts of being a good and honest member of society." ~Sensei Gichin Funakoshi
While karate is used to learn self-defense, to gain confidence, focus, and self-discipline it is not, and never has been, about fighting. Rather it is about teaching people how not to engage in combat. A true martial artist learns that their techniques are never to be used, exception being only under the most dire life-and-death circumstances.
