Common Questions

1. What’s the minimum age you start teaching children?

Typically, we can enroll children in the regular program starting around age 5. Depending on maturity and development most children are capable of joining the Beginner/Novice level classes around this age.

We also have a special Little Dragons Program for 4 and 5 year olds.

2. Is my child too shy to try karate?

Simply put...no. Karate is one of the best ways for shy children to find themselves and develop confidence. Sometimes it takes a while for extremely shy children to feel comfortable being on the floor away from Mom and Dad, but we help them with little nudges towards independence while respecting their personal comfort level. Some of the best students to have achieved the rank of black belt at Kushindokai began their training in tears at the side of the dojo.

3. Is my child too hyperactive to take karate?

Most children who are hyperactive can learn how to channel their energy into their training over time and thrive in the structure offered by martial arts. This can result in excellent focus and work habits both in the dojo and at home and school.

4. How many classes can I attend?

Once you sign up you can attend an unlimited number of classes at or below your belt level every week. We even have some Advanced level belts attend Novice level classes to get extra review work. See our class schedule.

5. Can I get private lessons?

Yes, you can book private lessons with Sensei Michael. This can be a one-time thing or on an ongoing basis. Contact us for more information.

6. Do I have to pay for my gradings or belts?

No. At Kusindokai we do not charge extra fees for gradings or new belts.

7. How hard is the training?

The training at Kushindokai will be challenging, both physically and mentally. All we can do is ask our students to bring the right attitude to the school and give their best effort. At the end of the day the results you get will depend on how much effort you put in.

8. Do you have any openings?

Our doors are always open to new students that have a desire to learn karate. We exist only to pass on the valuable life lessons the martial arts can teach.

9. How long does it take to get to a black belt?

It can take anywhere from 4-6 years, or even longer, for a student to work up to their black belt grading. This time can vary depending on the amount of time and work that is invested in the training.

10. Do you require students to spar?

We offer point sparring classes once per week for kids and adults. While point sparring is not mandatory to progress through the ranks, it is required during the black belt grading. Sparring is highly recommended as this is where you get to put all your hard training into practice and gain valuable experience.

Our sparring classes are non-contact point sparring, and we use full protective gear (head, hands, feet, mouth guard, cup). Read more about our Sparring classes.

11. Do you offer a trial program?

Yes, we offer a free 2 week trial. You can come in and take as many classes as you wish to see if our school is a fit for your needs. Click here to get more information about this offer.

12. How do I get started?

It’s easy! To get started just call us at the school anytime or drop in during class hours. You can start a trial period right away and jump onto the floor. Or you can come and watch a class to see what you think. We’d love to have you join the Kushindokai family and experience all the benefits the martial arts offers.
